What counts as research?

The best bit of my job (apart from teaching) is research.

My research does not involve people in white coats with clipboards, measuring and reporting facts.

Its about people, power, politics, social justice, writing, being creative - adventures (and misadventures) in learning, and most of all, making the world a better and fairer place.

'Doing' research

Metaphor is the core. Through creative story-making (writing, art making and performance/media I work with teachers, pre-service teachers (students) and communities to create digital narratives.  The beautiful and sometimes troubling images/metaphors we discover allow insights into our motivations, hopes and capabilities.  I work a lot with other people - not just researchers, or educators, but artists and engineers, children, youth workers, parents. musicians, tech gurus.

Questions I'm exploring...

  • Can learning in natural and virtual environments help us to be better learners, communicators, and more balanced human beings?

  • How can making and sharing through traditional and digital arts help teachers hone their skills as reflexive professionals?

  • How can making and sharing narratives through traditional and digital arts benefit children as learners in diverse communities

  • Can creating and re-purposing Open Education Resources benefit pre-service teachers' professional skills and knowledges?

  • What are the political and cultural enablers and barriers for academics engaging in Open Education Practice?
